A small community spread among Dallas and Polk Counties, Grimes, Iowa, is a part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located about 10 miles northwest of Des Moines and is home to a population estimated in 2004 to be almost 6,000, up from just over 5,000 at the 2000 census. The community takes up an area of about nine square miles, and residents here have a median household income over just over $56,000 a year.
The city is home to a rather young community when compared with the rest of the state. Its median age is just 31.3, versus the state's average of 36.6. Residents also tend to be highly education, with more than 30 percent of residents holding at least a bachelor's degree. It also is a fast growing community, as its population has grown by more than 130 percent since 1990. Traveling around the region is made easy by Grimes's location at the crossroads of Highway 141 and Interstates 80 and 35.
Grimes, along with the neighboring community Dallas Center, share the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District which encompasses one high school just outside of Grimes, one middle school in Dallas Center, and three elementary schools, two in Grimes and one in Dallas Center. Though there are no colleges or universities within Grimes, Des Moines has several schools at just 10 miles away, including Drake University, Grand View College, Des Moines Area Community College, Hamilton College, Des Moines University and AIB College of Business.
For leisure opportunities, Grimes is home to several parks and other points of interest, including Water Works Park, where the public library is also located; Lions Park, with a shelter house, soccer fields and playground equipment; Beaverbrooke Park, Shawvers Park, the Longview Golf Center and the Grimes Sports Complex, 44 acres of tennis courts, soccer fields, volleyball courts, softball and baseball fields, basketball courts, a skate park and walking trails. The annual Funtastic Days celebration provides residents a chance to come out and enjoy themselves among their neighbors.
